Mothering the Mother
The Doula Package
Before the Birth
I will visit you twice (each visit not less than 2 hours)
before the birth to be confident in your wishes
and to get to know your likes and dislikes in order to
support you when you are focussing on the birth.
We will discuss any other births or pregnancies and the outcomes.
We will discuss or write the birth plan,
including location, positions, pain relief,
birthing pools,
intervention etc.
We will also spend some time discussing if things dont go to plan,
and how you would like this managed as positively as possible.
We will check you have all the supplies you need
in preparation for the birth and the days following
and support
in place for other children, pets work etc
If you have a Partner we will discuss the support s/he would like during the labour and any concerns that s/he has.
We will discuss breastfeeding and start preparing your body for this,
discussing diet and skin care.
I will give you a hand massage, simple manicure and pedicure
to help you feel ready for your special day.
I will teach you how to massage your baby
and explain the benefits of infant massage.
I am a member of the IAIM, International Association of Infant Massage
Two sessions before the birth and three after.
Birth Day
I will join you as soon as you want when labour starts and stay with you until baby is delivered
and you are happy for me to leave.
My role is:-
to support you, offering massage and other relaxation techniques
to
aid in labour.
to remind you of your breathing methods and encourage you especially if things get tiring.
to ensure that your wishes are adhered to by the medical profession
if appropriate.
to explain
what is happening and why if things do not go plan
to stay by your side and help you stay empowered
to help you make the best possible decisions for you and your baby.
I will support your Partner as discussed before the birth
Post birth
I will visit you twice in the immediate days after the birth
(each visit not less than 2 hours)
to review the birth, yours and the babys progress
and help practically so you can relax and enjoy those early days.
Practical help includes light housework
such as loading washing machine, dishwasher, changing your bed,
shopping for necessities for you and baby,
to ensure that you rest and take time for yourself
I will visit again at six weeks to give you your hand written birth journal
as a keepsake and ensure that all is progressing well.
I can babysit at this point so for example
you and your Partner can have lunch together
and spend some quality time reflecting on your new life.
I will be available by phone and by email as you need me two weeks before and after birth.
I am building a wide range of books, articles,
CDs including hypnobirth and a tens machine
that you are welcome to borrow at no cost.
